wednesday the 20th, drive with brett: 6-7pm ‘the covers show’

An hour long mix of covers and versions of traditional songs, with a background soundtrack of The Residents’ Third Reich and Roll. The Third Reich and Roll is a twisted, atonal, arhythmic, nigh-unlistenably mad son-of-a-bitch covers record. I whole-heartedly recommend it. (wiki that shit)

Tom Waits – The Return of Jackie and Judy (The Ramones)

Yo La Tengo – Nuclear War (Sun Ra)

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan – Ramblin’ Man (Hank Williams)

The Clash – Wrong Em Boyo (trad)

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Stagger Lee (trad)

(the preceding two songs are both versions of a traditional blues ‘Stagger Lee’. Check out this article from the guardian for a nice history of the song)

The Fall – Victoria (The Kinks)

Sonic Youth – Rowche Rumble (The Fall)

Wilco – 13 (Big Star)

Belle and Sebastian – Whiskey in the Jar (trad.)

The Residents! Madness!

Until next Wednesday,

The Common Theme – REMIX CITY – Monday 11th of August

My Moon My Man – Fesit – remixed by Boys Noize

Bloc Party – Two More Years – remixed by MSTRKRFT

Monster Hospital – Metric – Bill gave it to me yonks ago & now I can’t remember who remixed it! Oopsy! Maybe more MSTRKRFT…?

Intergalactic – Beastie Boys – jungle remix by some fabulous yet anonymous musician

Walking With a Ghost – Tegan & Sara – remixed by Miami Horror

Woman – Wolfmother – remixed by MSTRKRFT

Riders on the Storm vs Rapture – Blondie & the Doors – anon remix again!

Witness – Roots Manuva – yet another excellent but anonymous remix

Thanks for coming, see you again next week!

Tuesday Drive with Camo

Another day, another daily dose of dangerous grooves and a dollop of dark & deep Drum ‘n’ Bass. Stocked a plenty with the new and the old for the show, with tastes of some big local tunes in the dub and the dubstep genres, as well as throwing the heavy further down the track with big tunes from the depths of the dnb . . . not to mention interviews with The Black Seeds and the organisers of the Rumble in the Jungle.

The Common Theme – DRUGS – Monday 4th of August

I read a really interesting book over the weekend called “Rolling Away” by Lynne Marie Smith.

In a nutshell…Lynne moved to The Big Apple from her small town American farming upbringing (true story by the way) to study acting.

She got in way over her head and her life deteriorates from there.

I won’t spoil it too much, so now you’re going to have to go read it! Or just check out her blog…

So, I thought was about time to do the Drugs Common Theme.

Heroin – Velvet Underground

C’Mere – Interpol

Go or Go Ahead – Rufus Wainwright

Perfectly Evil – Pluto

My Drug Buddy – Lemonheads

Strung Out Again – Elliott Smith

Mr Self Destruct – Nine Inch Nails

Special K – Placebo

Cocaine Blues – live at Falsom Prison – Johnny Cash

White Punks on Dope – The Tubes
