Christchurch Peace March 3 October 2009

WorldMarch

MEDIA RELEASE: 11.9.09   Christchurch Peace March 3 October 2009

The first World March to circle the earth calling for the end of war and nuclear weapons, and the elimination of violence of all kinds (physical, economic, racial, religious, cultural, sexual, psychological).

The World March will begin in Wellington, New Zealand on 2 October 2009, the anniversary of Gandhi´s birth, declared the International Day of Nonviolence by the United Nations. It will end in the Andes Mountains (Aconcagua, Argentina) on 2 January 2010.

The March will last 90 days, travelling through 90 countries over all six continents, celebrated by activities and events involving millions of people along and beyond its route. It will pass through all climates and seasons, from the hot summer of the tropics and deserts, to the icy cold of Siberia and Antarctica.

The Christchurch World Peace March on Saturday 3 October follows the Christchurch Peace Walk established by Christchurch City Council and the Disarmament and Security Centre as a Christchurch Peace City initiative. It will start at 1pm at the Tautahi Pa site (Barbadoes Street and Oxford Tce) where Maori elders will share some of their peace heritage. It will then go to the Fire Fighters’ Memorial and past the Elsie Locke Park before heading to Victoria Square to the pou marking the ancient site of the Waitaha pa of Puari. The walk will continue along the Avon River where the Lantern Ceremony has been held every year since 1975 to mark Hiroshima and Nagasaki Days on 6 and 9 August during Peace Week. Walkers will then go to the WEA, 52 Gloucester Street to view an exhibition of photos of Mahatma Gandhi. The March will end at the World Peace Bell in the Botanic Gardens about 3.30pm where the bell will be rung to connect with those who are travelling on from Wellington on the World Peace March. Speakers include Chrissie Williams, former Mayor Garry Moore and two of the international marchers.
