Wenerei Drive with Brett 30th July

I must apologise. I was going to add some thoughts and post this on Thursday morning, but I was distracted from the task at hand, so it’s a few days late.

I’ll quickly mention Nick Cave’s lecture, The Secret Life of the Love Song. It was written for the Vienna Poetry Festival in 1998 and released as audio on CD in 2000. Whether you think it is fantastic or melodramatic and overblown will probably depend on your existing opinion of Nick Cave. If you don’t like him, don’t bother. If you do like him, track it down. The University of Canterbury library has a copy, and I’m sure the nice folks at Galaxy Records will be able to import one for you.

The lecture’s crux is the argument that a love song is a sad song. A song which expresses both the joy and the sorrow of longing. (Roughly the theme of the songs I played in the last hour of the show) Also on the CD is a lecture on christianity ‘The Flesh Made Word’ and a few recordings of Mr Cave’s songs. The version of ‘West Country Girl’ is worth the price of admission alone.

Also, I’m quite excited about the new album from The Bug – ‘London Zoo’ which is out on Ninjatune. (myspace) Poison Darts has been kicking round the playlist for a little while, and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of the record.

Anyways,

To the playlist!

Peace,

monday drive with brett. it rocked, it rolled, and then it hit the countryside.

A few words on some of the stuff I played today…

Firstly, Invincible; She’s an MC from Detroit and has a new record out called ‘Shapeshifters’ which is totally sweet. If radical-urban-postmodern-left-wing politics, catchy eclectic production and intelligent, witty, complex rhyming sounds like your idea of good hip-hop you owe it to yourself to give this a listen. The record is out on ’emergence media’, and you can check out her myspace here.

Secondly, Mazzy Star; ‘She Hangs Brightly’ came out in 1990, so it is by no stretch of the imagination a new record, but since I discovered it last year, I can’t seem to get enough. It falls somewhere in the sweet spot between shoegaze and country; like lying in bed with the curtains open on a clear night after knocking back a few of shots of cough syrup. Highly recommended. (The record that is. Drinking robotussin whilst gazing into the ether is to be done strictly at your own risk.)

The last ten minutes of this evening’s show – where I dropped a subtle re-edit of some some mainstream 70s pop – generated a great deal of controversy. (one angry phonecall, one text message, and one mild rant from your host, to be precise) The track in question came my way via a nifty little blog called ‘music for robots’ which covers a range of music, from house and electro to alt.country and, well… dad-rock. You can check the edit out for yourself here. I felt it was in keeping with the ‘discothèque’ theme. If you feel you need to compare it to the original, look no further than your parents’ record collection.

Peace,

Brett

ps.

cheers to Annie for the props.
